Top 10 most anticipated films for 2014

So, better late than never, here are my top ten most anticipated films for 2014. There were a lot of films to consider such as Luc Besson’s latest film Lucy , Ridley Scott’s latest endeavor Exodus where he’s teaming up with Christian Bale and Sigourney Weaver and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as well as a whole host of others. Ultimately though I’ve whittled down my picks to just ten movies. I hope you enjoy reading through them, let me know what you think in the comments!

10. Jane Got a Gun

Despite a very troubled production this one has attracted a lot of talent such as Gavin O’Connor (Warrior), Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender and Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin), and although some of those have come and gone, I’m putting my faith into the script and the talent. It could just as easily be a train wreck though after the problems it’s had.

9. Maps to the Stars

David Cronenberg’s film Maps to the Stars is about Hollywood and contemporary Western culture, which sounds interesting, but I have to say that it’s the combined draw of two of my absolute favourite actress which attracts me to this one – Julianne Moore and Olivia Williams. The film also features roles played by Robert Pattinson,  Mia Wasikowska and Carrie Fisher.

8. Interstellar

Christopher Nolan’s new movie is naturally going to draw attention, and although his work on its own is enough to interest me, it’s the cast which he has assembled which gets this one onto this list. We have Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain collected together which is exciting, and of course it wouldn’t be a Nolan film without Michael Caine also being involved!

7. Locke

Tom Hardy’s talents will always draw me towards a film, and it sounds like he will be really tested here where he must hold our attention practically solely by himself for an hour and a half, in a film that plays out in real time. His character goes on a car journey and has his life unravel before him as he recieves phone calls from a vareity of people. Alongside Hardy we also have roles played by Andrew Scott and Olivia Colman, both of whom have really impressed me in different projects, most prominently Sherlock and Tyrannosaur.

6. Magic in the Moonlight

Woody Allen’s next film after the very impressive Blue Jasmine was going to draw my attention regardless. Putting Emma Stone and Colin Firth in as the two leads just secures this one’s place on my list.

5. How to Catch a Monster

Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut has had me interested for quite a while. It’ll be interesting to see how he fairs in that position, but the tale itself of a dark underworld and roads that lead to an underwater town sounds intriguing, and the cast which includes Matt Smith and Christina Hendricks is yet another reason to check this one out.

4. The Drop

A film about crime, a murder, a scam artist and a lost pitbull does sound like a fairly odd premise I grant you, but it’s attracted Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace both of which I’m a big fan of, as well as the late James Gandolfini. The director Roskam previously directed Bullhead with Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone), who also is in The Drop – making the whole project look incredibly promising.

3. The Wind Rises

Hayao Miyazaki’s swan song after giving us films such as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke  is automatically put on my must see list, and The Wind Rises promises to be a bittersweet and emotional journey, both in terms of its content, and due to us saying goodbye to a man who has truly marked the cinematic landscape of the past thirty years. This one easily found its way onto this list.

2. Under the Skin

Scarlett Johansson stars in what looks like a very surreal and intriguing film, which is based on the novel by Michel Faber. I know a few plot details by now, but I’m trying to avoid as much as I can so that I can go into it as blindly as possible.

1. Her

Written and directed by Spike Jonze (Adaptation) and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson and Amy Adams this film about a writer who develops a relationship with his operating system (voiced by Johansson) look incredibly promising, and the positive reviews I’m reading only reinforce my anticipation for this one!
