Top 10 most anticipated films for 2014

Top Ten 2014

So, better late than never, here are my top ten most anticipated films for 2014. There were a lot of films to consider such as Luc Besson’s latest film Lucy , Ridley Scott’s latest endeavor Exodus where he’s teaming up with Christian Bale and Sigourney Weaver and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as well as a whole host of others. Ultimately though I’ve whittled down my picks to just ten movies. I hope you enjoy reading through them, let me know what you think in the comments!

Jane Got a Gun10. Jane Got a Gun

Despite a very troubled production this one has attracted a lot of talent such as Gavin O’Connor (Warrior), Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender and Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin), and although some of those have come and gone, I’m putting my faith into the script and the talent. It could just as easily be a train wreck though after the problems it’s had.

Maps to the Stars9. Maps to the Stars

David Cronenberg’s film Maps to the Stars is about Hollywood and contemporary Western culture, which sounds interesting, but I have to say that it’s the combined draw of two of my absolute favourite actress which attracts me to this one – Julianne Moore and Olivia Williams. The film also features roles played by Robert Pattinson,  Mia Wasikowska and Carrie Fisher.

Interstellar8. Interstellar

Christopher Nolan’s new movie is naturally going to draw attention, and although his work on its own is enough to interest me, it’s the cast which he has assembled which gets this one onto this list. We have Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain collected together which is exciting, and of course it wouldn’t be a Nolan film without Michael Caine also being involved!

Locke7. Locke

Tom Hardy’s talents will always draw me towards a film, and it sounds like he will be really tested here where he must hold our attention practically solely by himself for an hour and a half, in a film that plays out in real time. His character goes on a car journey and has his life unravel before him as he recieves phone calls from a vareity of people. Alongside Hardy we also have roles played by Andrew Scott and Olivia Colman, both of whom have really impressed me in different projects, most prominently Sherlock and Tyrannosaur.

Magic in the Moonlight6. Magic in the Moonlight

Woody Allen’s next film after the very impressive Blue Jasmine was going to draw my attention regardless. Putting Emma Stone and Colin Firth in as the two leads just secures this one’s place on my list.

How to Catch a Monster5. How to Catch a Monster

Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut has had me interested for quite a while. It’ll be interesting to see how he fairs in that position, but the tale itself of a dark underworld and roads that lead to an underwater town sounds intriguing, and the cast which includes Matt Smith and Christina Hendricks is yet another reason to check this one out.

Animal Rescue4. The Drop

A film about crime, a murder, a scam artist and a lost pitbull does sound like a fairly odd premise I grant you, but it’s attracted Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace both of which I’m a big fan of, as well as the late James Gandolfini. The director Roskam previously directed Bullhead with Matthias Schoenaerts (Rust and Bone), who also is in The Drop – making the whole project look incredibly promising.

The Wind Rises3. The Wind Rises

Hayao Miyazaki’s swan song after giving us films such as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke  is automatically put on my must see list, and The Wind Rises promises to be a bittersweet and emotional journey, both in terms of its content, and due to us saying goodbye to a man who has truly marked the cinematic landscape of the past thirty years. This one easily found its way onto this list.

Under the Skin2. Under the Skin

Scarlett Johansson stars in what looks like a very surreal and intriguing film, which is based on the novel by Michel Faber. I know a few plot details by now, but I’m trying to avoid as much as I can so that I can go into it as blindly as possible.

Her1. Her

Written and directed by Spike Jonze (Adaptation) and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson and Amy Adams this film about a writer who develops a relationship with his operating system (voiced by Johansson) look incredibly promising, and the positive reviews I’m reading only reinforce my anticipation for this one!

So thanks for reading! Let me know what you think in the comment box below.

  1. her is my number one of 2013, so I highly recommend that. Nice list, Inherent Vice is my most anticipated.

    1. Thank you! I couldn’t include it as I’m not sure that it will be out in the UK this year, although I might be behind the times… It certainly is one that I’m very much looking forward to!

  2. I would also toss Inherent Vice in there, but outstanding list nevertheless! Interstellar is my most anticipated :). Her was my number 3 film of the year so I’m sure you’ll love it! Also, Under the Skin is phenomenal, another one I’m sure you’ll enjoy :).

    1. Thank you very much! I didn’t include ‘Inherent Vice’ as I don’t think it is out in the UK this year, although I may be mistaken.
Excellent! I’m so glad that you like them – I hope I do too!

  3. Fantastic list! Interstellar is my number 1 but I’m really intrigued about The Drop as I loved Bullhead

    1. Cheers! Yeah I have pretty high hopes for it – the cast really helps solidify my hopes for it. There’s a lot of talent there.

  4. Some of my most anticipated are among your list. I’ve already watched Her, which I wasn’t the biggest fan of.

    1. Oh really? Do you like Adaptation or Being John Malkovich?

      1. Haven’t seen either, actually!

        1. Oh man please check out Adaptation!!

          1. I will! Really curious about that one.

          2. I hope you like it – it’s one of my all time favourites!

  5. Looks like a great list of films! I haven’t heard of most of these so you’ve given me some to look out for.

    1. Oh great – I’m pleased that I could do that!

  6. Some very cool picks in there. I can’t wait to see Her.

    1. Thanks, I know right? Hopefully it lives up to our expectations!

  7. Some cool flicks on this list. I’m high on Interstellar. I’m also really anxious for this weekend’s The Monuments Men. Tremendous true story that I hope plays out well on screen.

    1. Yeah there are some promising ones on here! I have high hopes for Interstellar – it should be really good.
I haven’t really been that taken with The Monuments Men – but perhaps I’m missing something!

  8. It’s a shame you don’t have Her yet. It’s phenomenal.

    1. I’m very please to hear you say that, I cannot wait. So many reasons to watch it, from the cast, the director/writer and the praise it’s receiving.

  9. Interstellar… oh how I cannot wait for that!

    Solid list James!

    1. I know right! There’s a number here that I can’t wait for.
      Cheers Zoë!

  10. Nice list. Interstellar for me! And we FINALLY get to see Her soon! : ) Also want to see The Wind Rises.

    1. Thanks – I cannot wait until I see Her! It’s taking so long!!

  11. Great choices! So many great movies coming out this year.

    1. Cheers! Which are your most anticipated?

      1. I’ve been looking forward to Her which we finally get this week! After that, Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel is the one I’m most looking forward to. I’m also curious to see Calvary from John Michael McDonagh who directed The Guard.

        1. Man I can’t wait to see Her!
I’m not crazy about Wes Anderson though – just can’t seem to quite get into his films…

          1. I’ve heard a few people say that – I guess his style is just love it or hate it. I’m definitely on team Wes though, and have my fingers crossed that Grand Budapest will live up to Moonrise Kingdom.

          2. Well I haven’t seen Moonrise Kingdom or Fantastic Mr Fox – both of which I do actually want to see.

          3. Hope you enjoy Moonrise. It’s a magical film and the score is perfect.

    2. I’ve heard many great things so fingers crossed!

  12. Great recommendations here – I’m also looking forward to Jane Got A Gun despite its troubles. Either way it’ll be interesting for sure.

Definitely skeptical about Gosling directorial debut but we’ll see how it goes.

I’m sure Interstellar will be amazing – Chris Nolan just knows how to make audience’s purr!

    1. Cheers!
I really don’t know what to make of Goslings project, but I really like him as an actor and will be checking it out purely out of interest!

  13. Very interesting list man. Everyone seems to rank Interstellar up there on their own must-see’s and I have to say I’m no different. I am, however, also really curious about Under the Skin, esp since Joe up above has hinted at its quality. I’m also looking very much forward to the newest Wachowski production, Jupiter Ascends. Looks interesting for sure.

    1. Cheers, I don’t know about Jupiter Ascends… I wasn’t blown away by Cloud Atlas to be honest. Did you like that one?

      1. You know man, I managed to miss that one since the reviews I was reading as they came in were not overly impressive. Then I thought maybe I’d eventually give it a go at the local dollar theater here but didn’t do that, either. Maybe i’ll get around to it on Netflix or something but I’m in no hurry to see that one. I’m a huge fan of the Matrix, though, so that was basically enough to earn Jupiter Ascending a spot on my Epic list.

        1. Well, it will be interesting to hear your take on it if you ever do see it. It’s not an awful film, it’s just not the profound masterpiece it wants to be!
